Mission & Vision

Our Purpose

Trust for Trauma Journalism helps media professionals prepare for this important work and the emotional impact of covering traumatic events.

Our mission is to provide resources to advance innovative, exemplary reporting on violence, conflict, tragedy and their aftermath, and to sustain global initiatives that prepare media professionals for the emotional impact of covering traumatic events.

Our Strategy

  1. Promote public understanding of the effects of vicarious trauma and stress on journalists covering violence and conflict.
  2. Provide educational opportunities for journalists, photojournalists, media professionals, editors, and journalism students to learn trauma awareness and trauma-informed reporting techniques that prepare news professionals for the emotional impact of covering tragedy and violence.
  3. Contribute resources for continuing education and certifications through scholarships, sponsorships, and grants that support trauma-informed journalism.
  4. Connect trauma journalists to mental health and peer support resources to support their physical well-being and promote self-care.
  5. Support global initiatives that promote inter-disciplinary trauma awareness and trauma-informed curriculum to be included at journalism schools, colleges, and universities.
  6. Engage with the broader community of journalists, media professionals, journalism schools, professional organizations, and associations to promote trauma awareness, trauma-informed best practices, and the development of trauma assistance programs.
